Panui - Week 5, Term 4

top of newsletter

It’s been a busy and entertaining few weeks at school. Pet Day was another hit — well done to all those children who reared animals for this. The staff even joined in the fun with a hobby horse event (organised by none other than our own Whaea Murphy). This provided plenty of laughs for everyone… mostly at our expense!

Our Kapa Haka group did us proud at the Puanga Festival — they represented our school beautifully, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. Nga mihi ki a whaea Narnz raua ko Matua Lewis mo tō mahi.

Totara and Kahikatea kicked off camp season with a trip to TOPEC last week, enjoying three days of outdoor challenges and team building! They all came back with big smiles (and even bigger laundry piles for parents).

If you’ve walked past Koromiko, you’ll have noticed our new mural facing the court. Designed and painted by Michael Montgomery, it features our school whakataukī:
Piki tahi eke tahi ki te tihi maunga – Climb as one, ascend as one to the summit of the mountain.
It’s vibrant, meaningful, and looks incredible; a real celebration of who we are as a school.

A big thank you to everyone for ensuring children have their hats. The weather has finally caught up and decided it’s summer! And now that the pool is open, it’s officially time to start packing those togs and towels again. Bring on the sunshine!

A couple of quick safety reminders:

  • please avoid parking over our neighbours’ driveways
  • 8:30–9:00am is our drop-off window — we’ve noticed a few extra early arrivals lately

Thanks as always for your support and please reach out or pop in and see me if you need anything.

Ngā mihi,
Sarah Johnston
Principal

Education Outside the Classroom - Camps

We’re lucky to have such keen and supportive parents. Your willingness to get involved in school camps is appreciated and helps create really special experiences for our tamariki. Thank you!

There are just a couple of things to keep in mind for anyone planning to help out:

1. Police Vets
If you’d like to transport children (other than your own) or stay overnight, a current police vet is required. Unfortunately, if this hasn’t been processed and cleared in time, we won’t be able to have you join us for those parts of camp. These can take a while to come through, so please get them sorted early — we’d hate for paperwork to be the reason you miss out!

2. One Parent Per Child
Our Board of Trustees has a policy of allowing a maximum of one parent per child to attend camp. This helps us manage accommodation, costs, and supervision ratios and ensures camp stays focused on being a learning adventure for our students (rather than a family getaway!). Staff carefully plan the number of adults needed for safety and supervision, and any extras can make things trickier to manage. In cases where more adults are needed for safety reasons, teachers may invite additional parents to join.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

Health New Zealand advice

  • Measles is circulating and is very contagious. There are now measle cases in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu, Nelson and Wellington, and we expect further cases across New Zealand.
  • Watch out for symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash.
  • If there are no measles cases at your school, students and staff should attend school regardless of vaccination status.
  • Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated students/staff may be asked by Public Health to stay home only if they’re close contacts of a confirmed case.
  • Public health officials will contact those affected directly with instructions, including quarantine if needed.
  • Fully vaccinated students and staff can return to school once their status is confirmed by Public Health.
  • Public Health is working to speed up this process to avoid unnecessary time away from school.
  • People are considered immune to measles after having two doses of a measles vaccine from 12 months or older, or if you have had measles before.
  • Anyone born between 1969 and 2004 may have only received one vaccine dose and might not be fully protected. It’s safe to get extra doses. A free vaccine can be booked online or via the Vaccination Helpline on 0800 28 29 26.

From the PTA

After many years of dedicated service, Daphnee Riddle has finished up as Treasurer — Daphnee thank you so much for all the time you have given our school over the years, we can’t thank you enough. Our thanks also goes to Erin Gibb and Shannon Reid for their fantastic work over the past year as President and Secretary.

We’re delighted to welcome our new team:
President – Shannon Reid
Secretary – Sara Bourke
Treasurer – Michaela Bocarro
We’re in very good hands moving forward!

Our next big event is Housie, and it’s shaping up to be a great day. Huge thanks to all the parents who’ve offered to donate baking. Please drop these off at the Community Centre on Saturday between 4 and 5pm (no need to cut them — we’ll take care of that). A special mention goes to Lou Berry, who has been the driving force behind this fundraiser.

And finally… it’s Mega Raffle Time! 🎉

There are some incredible prizes up for grabs (see the list below 👇), including a $1000 Prezzy Card! Each family will receive two tickets sent home with their eldest child this week. Please return all tickets (sold or unsold) to the office by 12th December.

If you’d like to buy more tickets, pop in and see Emma in the office and if you are unable to sell your two tickers, just return them, no worries at all.

Our Senior Athletics Day is coming up this Tuesday, 4th November for all children aged 8 years and older.

  • Children will compete in their age group as of 12th November, which aligns with the Dixon Banner date.
  • Please make sure your child is at school by 8:50am, as the bus will be leaving at 9:10am to take them down to the HUB.
  • We’ll return to school around lunchtime — please note that children are to stay at school after the event.
  • The first event will start at 9:30am, and each child will take part in six events: 100m sprint, 200m sprint, 400m sprint, long jump, high jump, discus and shot put. Please see the timeline above for a rough event schedule.

If you’re feeling energetic, we’d love some parents and whānau to join in the parent relay – just let Sheri know on the day if you’d like to take part! Children should come dressed in their Tawhiti School sports gear – Tawhiti sports top, black shorts, and school hat. Bring on the sunshine, smiles, and some friendly competition!
