Panui - Term 4, Week 2
The term has started well with our school values being seen in action daily. Classrooms are alive with the hum of learning and our juniors had a wonderful day of learning out at Hollard Gardens yesterday (ako). Strong relationships can be seen in both the playground and classroom with children playing and learning together (whanaungatanga), kapahaka and PE lessons are providing valuable learning in the cultural and sporting space creating happy and resilient learners (hauora) and above all our children are showing kindness to one another (manaakitanga). What more could we want right?!
The pool is now completed and the first classes of swimmers were in for over an hour with no blue lips! As I mentioned in my last newsletter this would not have been possible without the sponsorship from Greaves Electrical. Our one and only Whaea Narnz has also been busy with her paint brush, livening up the area. The pool will be open at lunchtimes and classes will be starting to swim, so pack those togs!
Please remember my door is always open. If you have any queries, questions, concerns or would like a chat, pop in anytime!

Puanga
Next Thursday 26th October, our Kapahaka roopu are heading off to Waitara to represent the school in the annual Puanga festival. They are sounding and looking amazing. It's always a great day so we'd love to see any whānau there who are able to come along and tautoko.
Gumboot Friday - 3rd November
Gumboot Friday gives young Kiwis, our precious rangatahi, free and fast access to qualified counselling.
Two years ago they were funding 550 counselling sessions at a cost of $78,000 a month, now they're funding over 3,400 sessions each month, at a cost of approx. $500,000. They need to find $125,000 a week so our kids get the help they need so let's help them out to make this happen.
With the change of Government people think they will now be funded. Throughout the election the Prime Minister Elect said he would fund Gumboot Friday out of the Innovation Fund of $20million. So, people are assuming that we've got $20million and our kids are finally going to be ok and supported. What is actually going to happen is they are matching dollar for dollar. So if $ doesn't come in, they are no better off, and might even be worse off. They received $36,000 in the last fornight, putting them well behind where they need to be with still $214,000 to be raised for the month.
So on 3rd November - we will have a gold coin mufti day. Mufti and most importantly GUMBOOTS can be worn to school.
Yearbooks
The end of year is coming around fast! Paula is busy working away on our 2023 school yearbook. These are always amazing and provide a great keepsake for their time at Tawhiti. If you wish to order one of these, they are $15 and can be done via internet transfer or coming in to see Emma in the office. If transferring, please include your child's name and yearbook in the details.
Sunhats
All children need to wear a school sunhat during Term 4 and 1. A named bucket hat can be ordered through the office for $15 (cash, eftpos, online payment). These come in two sizes, with an adjustable toggle - 54cm & 58cm. Please come in and order them ASAP, as they take a few weeks to make. Alternatively, you can purchase a royal blue, wide brim or bucket style hat from the Warehouse or Postie.
Tennis
Tennis coaching with a professional coach is available at Hawera Lawn Tennis club. The programme focuses on fun and active recreation through term 4 2023 and term 1 2024. There will be fitness sessions available throughout the summer holiday period also. This is open to all age groups and is lots of fun with music and a social environment.
The cost to attend is $3 per participant, and racquets are available for those not having their own.
Measles
Recently an alert went out across New Zealand when a Northland student was diagnosed
with measles after attending a National Schools event in Wellington during the school holidays.
Te Whatu Ora Taranaki is reminding everyone to be vigilant following this case and keep an eye out for the signs and symptoms of measles which is a serious viral disease that can make people very sick.
It spreads very easily among people who have not had measles before or have not been immunised against measles. It can be passed on by breathing, sneezing, or coughing near others. You can catch measles just by being in a room someone with measles was in up to an hour before.
Where measles is suspected, please stay at home, and call your healthcare provider or Healthline on
0800 611 116 for more advice.
The best way to ensure you and your family/whānau are protected from measles is to be up to date with the measles immunisation (MMR).
If you aren’t sure whether you have had one or two doses of MMR, for most people it’s safe to get vaccinated again – just reach out to your health provider or visit your local pharmacy.
