Panui - Term 3, Week 6, 2023

And just like that, it is the middle of Term 3...the year is disappearing before our eyes.

We continued to be hit by sickness as the winter bugs fly around. Hopefully we are nearly over the worst of them. It is our normal policy for our kaiako (teachers) to message and check in if your child has been away for more than 2 days, particularly if their attendance is sitting below 80% across the year. So don't be alarmed if this happens - its just us checking in to see how things are and letting you know we are looking forward to seeing your child back fit and healthy at school.

I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate to our very own Miss Annika Roodbeen who has been selected to represent Taranaki for Hockey. She will be away competing in Week 9 and we wish her all the very best.

A couple of general reminders:

  • Please ensure your tamariki are not at school before 8:30. Some children are arriving as early as 8am, often before teachers are in their classes for the day. Before school care is the responsibility of parents.
  • We are currently having a number of parents head into classes at 2:30 and sit and talk to other parents. This is extremely distracting for both teachers and children. Our learning programmes go right through to 3pm, so if you are wanting to catch up with one another we kindly ask that you do this outside the classrooms. If you do wish to come into the classroom each day at 2:30 talk to your child's teacher and help with some classroom jobs (eg sight word testing, resource making etc)...we LOVE helpers!
  • If you have a preschooler who will be attending our school next year can you please click the enrolments tab above and enrol them ASAP.
  • Emma is away this week. So please remember to give your tamariki messages before school, let us know if they will be absent using the HERO app, and if possible save any camp payments etc until next week.

Noho ora mai (stay well)

Learning Programmes

We have moved onto a new focus of multiplication across the school.
What does this look like at the different stages of schooling?

  • Year 1 - Counting all the objects
  • Year 2 - Skip count (eg 5, 10, 15)
  • Year 3 - Use a combination of skip counting and addition
  • Year 4 - Use addition
  • Year 5 - Use known facts to work out unknown facts (eg 12x6 is the same as 10x6 and 2x6)
  • Year 6 - Have a range strategies they can use

One of the best ways you can help your child at home is by supporting them with their basic facts. If children are confident counting, skip counting, recalling their addition facts and recalling their basic multiplication facts then solving real world multiplication problems is easier. They are set up for success. There are many great ways you can help with basic facts at home - board games, card games, websites, family challenges. Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you need specific support and ideas with this.

Daffodil Day

Whether you have a personal connection to cancer, or you just want to make a difference - join us in creating a future with less cancer.

Tawhiti School will be supporting Daffodil Day by holding a fundraiser this Friday 25th August.

We ask that our tamariki come to school Friday dressed in kowhai (yellow), pop into the hall before school with a gold coin donation and receive either a daffodil or a yellow ribbon.

Note: This is not a mufti day. Kids either need to wear yellow to help raise awareness around the impacts of this awful illness or wear their school uniform.

Support this great cause!

Pizza lunch - This Thursday

Pohutukawa are fundraising for their camp to TOPEC. They will be selling pizza this Thursday for $2 a slice. Pop into the hall Thursday morning and place your order and support them if you can.

Tatarakihi Festival, 2023

Date: Friday 15th September

Venue: TSB HUB, Hawera

Tickets: $5/person - Door sales (our kapa haka tamariki are paid for by the school)

If you are free please pop along and support our roopu. We will be performing at 10:20. A notice to those involved/performing has been sent by Shane on HERO with further details.

Conservation group

Our conservation group have been busy down in our māra kai with Anna Dawson, Paula Thompson and Esther from Enviro schools. Loads of vegetable seeds and bee friendly flowers have been planted in our gardens and the team has built a new mini glasshouse as well. Discovering different creepy crawlies is always a highlight in the garden. The team are now getting kūmara and potatoes ready to plant in the coming months. The enthusiasm, team work and collaboration of this group is admirable.

We have the opportunity of our Enviro group to attend a Conservation Day being held by Enviroschools, along with Puke Ariki and Predator Free Taranaki on 7th September at Turuturu School. If you child is involved Whaea Anna will have sent you a permission notice on HERO.

We can't wait to see all our kaumatua/grandparents/special people next Monday. The plan for the day:

  • 11:30am - Head to the hall. Mix and mingle and enjoy a hot drink and scone.
  • 12pm - Head out into your grandchildren's classrooms. Teachers will have some activities planned for you during this time.
  • 1pm - Lunch time. Hopefully the sun is shining and it is warmer than it has been! Our PTA will be selling kai - sausages, works burgers, nachoes, american hot dogs and drinks. This DOES NOT need to be pre-ordered. Children and whānau can buy on the day. However, in order to help us with catering volumes could you please indicate what you are likely to buy on this following form.
  • 2pm - Assembly. Each class will be putting on a very small performance to make you smile! Please note: If it is cold and wet next Monday we may shorten lunch and start this at 1:30pm.

Pet Day

pet day entries

We are super excited about our upcoming pet day! Thank you to everyone who has registered an animal so far (see table above). If you still need to register please click here and fill out the form. (Hopefully this form is now working properly - there were a few issues with the QR codes that were sent home).

If you would like to get hold of a lamb for your child to rear for pet day email lambs@pkw.co.nz
They have lambs that they are giving away to good homes.

Our pet day is a fun day and is about participating. Calves and lambs will be judged on leading, rearing and connection. For the connection section children will be asked:

1. When was the calf/lamb born?
2. What made you choose this calf/lamb?
3. What will happen to your calf/lamb after Pet Day?
4. What do you love most about your calf/lamb?
5. Tell us about how you care for your calf/lamb.
